24.02.2007 :: Arizona Memorial

We slept until 9 am and then we had a comfotable breakfast Smile. After this we to the beach for 2 hours... it was very sunny but then we decided to take a break away from the beach, because we wanted to go to the Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor.

After a 1,5 bus drive we finally arrived there...

... but they said they have no more tickets for the ship tour to the Memorial. We were very disappointed. We could only do the audio tour in the museum... It was very interessting and very impressive! There were a lot of things to see: battleship models, the fate of single man, salvaged objects, pictures...

Outsite the museum we could see the Arizona Memorial from far away.

The architecture of the USS Arizona Memorial is explained by Preis (architect of the Memorial) as, "Wherein the structure sags in the center but stands strong and vigorous at the ends, expresses initial defeat and ultimate victory. The overall effect is one of serenity. Overtones of sadness have been omitted to permit the individual to contemplate his own personal responses, his innermost feelings."

Unlike other battleships the USS Arizona has never been lifted out of the water. Over 900 sailers have never been salvaged and the wreck of the USS Arizona became their resting place...

Next weekend we will rent a car again and drive a little around the island. I think we will catch up the ship tour to the Memorial. I really want to discover the feelings I will receive in this special place...

While I was standing there next to the Museum, little Mongoose run to and fro behind my back...Smile. I know it was not the right place to have fun, but I had...

And of course:
